Dough a Deer: an alternative wedding favor

We met the lovely Nicole from Dough a Deer at the Utterly Engaged New Year’s Party, in fact I needed her rather tall husband to help me reach something, then I found out he is English and the friendship blossomed. James was loving their milk shots. =)  Nicole owns her own favor company offering the cutest and freshest mini doughnuts for weddings or events.  She can match colours and sprinkles for your event and did I mention they are BAKED… not fried, so they last longer and there is no excuse not to eat them… mouth watering deliciousness.   Nicole has amazing attention to detail and she is wonderful to work with – check out her treats - http://www.doughadeer.com Continue reading →

What is your favorite Sweet Treat at the moment?
S’more whoopie pies that my company Bittersweet makes. I fancy anything with a marshmallow!
What dessert trend are you seeing at the moment for weddings?
Dessert tables. They can bring elements you normally wouldn’t see at a wedding (i.e. ice cream) and provide something beautiful and interactive for your guests to enjoy.
What FireFly package would you pick for your bachelorette party?
The D.J. lessons! If I wasn’t a pastry chef I would want to be a D.J.
Name 3 famous people you’d invite on your bachelorette party? Why?
Keri Russell because she is the kind of person you would want as a best friend. I would want it to be co-ed so I want Kiefer Sutherland there because he knows how to have a good time but he could protect us if things get a little too crazy and Conan O’Brien because we need someone to make us laugh!
What’s your most outrageous wedding memory, either one you have planned or one you have been a guest?
After getting smashed with a piece of cake the bride smashed a whole tier in the grooms face. :/
Which wedding are you: Beach, Mountain, Forest, or Countryside?
I think the perfect wedding would be to get married on the beach, have the reception on a vineyard and the after party in a modern home in Palm Springs. So I will say all of the above!
If you could give one piece of wedding advice to a couple, what would that be………..?
Keep it simple! Don’t get overwhelmed by details. Your family and friends just want to support you on your happy day. Keep things relaxed so you can enjoy your time with them.

Darla the creator of Darla Marie Designs has been a freelance graphic and fashion designer for 6 years.  Her designs have been featured in Teen Vogue Magazine and worn by super model Bar Refaeli.    With Darla’s passion for stationery and the fusion of practical projects with the creative process, Darla Marie Designs was created. Thanks for sharing Darla!

What made you decide to design wedding invitations?
I have been designing for clothing & graphics for over 6 years now, and after I worked on my own wedding designs and invitations, I fell in love with the romance of wedding design.  I love being able to capture the feeling of a wedding and create mini pieces of art to go with their special day.
What are the most popular designs from your collection?
Definitely the Hepburn and the Novak are my 2 most popular suites so far.
Do most people order custom designs or from your wedding collection?
It’s actually pretty split down the middle.  I try and have a variety of designs to offer my  clients, and that covers a lot of people, and then I have those who want something completely out of the box, which I love!
What FireFly package would you pick for your bachelorette party?
Definitely Bliss! I love the idea of a little pampering, a great bottle of wine and great food with my best girlfriends!
Name 3 famous people you’d invite on your bachelorette party?
Lucille Ball, because she’s hilarious, would be so entertaining and I have loved her since I was a little girl, Patricia Fields, so she could style us for the party and get us some amazing couture, and lastly, Marilyn Monroe, because I think she would be a blast to party with!
What’s your most outrageous wedding or bachelorette party memory?
Oh, fun! I would have to say my most outrageous bach party memory would have to be cramming 6 lovely ladies in a teenie tiny cab in LA trying to find somewhere to eat at 3am after a nite of dancing! =)
And wedding, that would have to be after my brother-in-law read the lyrics of “All My Love” he yells out “By LED ZEPPELIN!” (and does the rock and roll hand symbol! Classic moment!
Which wedding are you: Beach, Mountain, Forest, or Countryside?
Beach! My own wedding was on the beach and we loved it!
If you could give one piece of wedding advice to a couple, what would that be………..?
Always be honest with your partner, even if it’s hard to say and always be supportive of your partne

The Fry Girl Inc. – Bachelorette Party Sweets & Savories

frygirlShelley Beals founder of The Fry Girl Inc. grew up on a farm in Canada, where she learned the true meaning of hard work, community and cooking – especially home-made donuts.  She followed her entrepreneurial spirit and now owns numerous mini donut machines and other fryers.   Her heavenly fried foods, her reputation for superior client service and years of experience keeps her business growing.  Her mini-donuts are my favorite, truly mouthwatering and addictive (and not that bad for you with only 1 gram of fat and 26 calories per donut – for all you calorie counters).  They are also GREEN, they recycle their canola oil, Shelley’s plumber burns it in his work van, so her entire neighborhood smells like donuts.mmmmmmmmmmmm Wouldn’t these be a great addition to a bachelorette party?

The Fry Girl inc would be a great addition to your wedding or event – thanks Shelley.

What is your favorite fried food?
Deep fried perogies (my family makes them back in Canada).  I don’t make serve them in my business as they are too time consuming to make. My family prepares them normally only for special events.  My favorite food that we prepare is definitely mini funnel cakes but I also love our gourmet fries!
Why did you start Fry Girl?
I sort of fell into the business. I worked at a mini donut shop in Venice Beach for a couple of years & the owners sold me the catering side of their business.  It started out being only mini donuts and over the years, as I met more and more event planners, I kept getting asked to make french fries so I added them to our menu and now we are making all types of fun, fried foods.  People love fried food!!!
What type of events are perfect for Fry Girl?
We normally do larger events of 100+ guests like weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs, birthday parties, corporate events, movie premieres, set visits on tv shows, etc. however we will cater any type of party where people want to eat some delicious fried foods!
What are the most popular items on your menu?
I’d have to say that our mini donuts are still our most popular menu item.  We have 4 donut machines and often they are all booked out at the same time!
What FireFly package would you pick for your bachelorette party?
Wow…you have some great package ideas!  I like the Girls Getaway, The Wine Tour & Hot Springs & The Cooking Lesson and Whitewater Rafting ideas the best!  It would be a tough decision!!!
Name 3 famous people you’d invite on your bachelorette party? Why?
I’d invite Sade so she could serenade us…LOVE her!  I’d invite Mario Batali so he could cook for us and I’d invite Ellen DeGeneres to entertain us & keep us laughing!  I like to eat & laugh a lot!
What’s your most outrageous wedding or bachelorette party memory?
I actually never had a bachelorette party when I got married so I don’t have an answer for this question.
If you could give one piece of wedding advice to a couple, what would that be………..?
I would tell them to not stress about the minor details that no one will even notice and to enjoy every moment of their wedding day as the day goes by so fast!  Oh and to hire The Fry Girl to make mini corn dogs & gourmet fries for a late night wedding snack or to send their wedding guests on their way home with a bag of hot, fresh mini donuts which double great as a party favor!  After all that dancing and celebrating their guests are sure to get hungry by the end of the evening!

Vendor Love – Ever After Honeymoons

katieMeet Katie from Ever After Honeymoons, she started the company based on her love of travel (a girl after my own heart).  Now she helps couples plan their perfect honeymoon. Once you meet Katie you won’t even think twice about leaving your honeymoon in her hands.  She’s so good you may even invite her along before you realize. I sat down with Katie a little while ago and got to know the woman behind Ever After.
Thanks Katie!

What made you decide to start Ever After Honeymoons?

I absolutely love to travel, and really enjoy the process of planning trips. Based on this, I decided to start my own travel planning company. I started working with a lot of honeymoon couples and decided this was what I wanted to focus on. I love working with couples to plan their perfect honeymoons, and then hearing what a great time they had once they return.

What are the advantages/benefits of booking a honeymoon with Ever After Honeymoons?

There are a lot of benefits to having me plan your honeymoon. I save couples time, money, and get them extra perks like room upgrades. I take care of all travel arrangements to make everything as easy and stress free as possible. Plus a lot of couples that contact me don’t know where they want to go. I ask a lot of questions and then make suggestions for them. I have traveled a lot and am constantly getting feedback from my clients so I am able to make recommendations based on this.

Katie_01

Where is your favorite Honeymoon Destination so far?

I absolutely love Italy for the history, food, wine and scenery. And I love Playa del Carmen for the beaches, resorts and fun downtown area.

Where would you most like to travel to?

New Zealand and Croatia have been at the top of my list for a while now. I like visiting places with unique culture, beautiful coastlines, nice people and great food. I am planning on visiting Croatia next Spring, and am hoping to make it to New Zealand soon as well.

Katie_02

What FireFly package would you pick for your bachelorette party?

I would definitely do the Sonoma Valley wine tasting and bike tour! I love wine tasting and it would be really fun to experience Sonoma on bikes.

Name 3 famous people you’d invite on your bachelorette party? Why?

Oh that is a good question! Chelsea Handler for the laughs, Britney Spears to get everyone dancing, and Cameron Diaz because she seems like she would be a blast to hang out with.

Katie_03

What’s your most outrageous wedding memory, either one you have planned or one you have been a guest?

Another great question! At a wedding I was a guest at there was a circle in the dance floor. The groom got in the circle and was going crazy with the dance moves and ended up breaking a girls nose!!! Skipping dance classes before the wedding was a serious mistake!

If you could give one piece of wedding advice to a couple, what would that be………..?

Well I am going to make this honeymoon advice. I would say to really talk about what you each want to do during your honeymoon before you start planning anything. A honeymoon does not have to mean going to a beach resort if that doesn’t interest both of you. Compromise if you don’t have the same ideas of what your honeymoon should be. There is a perfect destination for every couple, and just ask me if you need help finding that!

Vendor Love – Just Wenderful

Just Wenderful

Wendy from Just Wenderful is a fabulous addition to your wedding or event.  She helps couples create a flawless wedding day.  She makes you feel at ease as soon as you meet her and your wish is her command - she is a true delight.  She  is bursting with great ideas and inspiration to truly make this YOUR day.  Ask her about her fabulous candy buffets which,  in my eyes, is a must for every wedding.

Thanks Wendy.

What is your favorite trend for weddings at the moment?

My favorite trend is not a trend at all!  It’s those twists on trends that couples come up with whether it be an ice cream bar buffet instead of the candy buffet or the framed backdrop for pictures instead of a photo booth. I love the couples who think outside the box!

What are the advantages of hiring a wedding coordinator for your wedding?

HUGE advantages!  From the planning stages, we will refer you to the best vendors (which we’ve worked with before and trust) and stay within your budget.  On the day of, there are countless tasks that we take care of you so you can enjoy YOUR day.  We supervise set up so that it goes accordingly and we’re on top of the time line so we don’t run out of time, just to list a few things.

786838959_JYj2d-S

What FireFly package would you pick for your bachelorette party?

The kayaking/wine tasting/sailing package would have to be my pick!  There were so many packages to choose from but this one has everything!  Kayaking for my adventurous girls and wine tasting while sailing for a relaxing finish.

Name 3 famous people you’d invite on your bachelorette party? Why?

Sandra Bullock just because I love her!  Ingrid Michaelson so we can sing kumbaya-style and Wayne Brady for the laughs!  He can strip if he wants to too!  Ha!

What’s your most outrageous wedding memory, either one you have planned or one you have been a guest?

Drunk guests are always funny.  I always worry about it becoming an issue, but it never has, thank God!  Lately, one of the bridemaid’s zipper broke of her dress, but she was buzzing away, dancing and showing her panties like no one’s business.  All was good!

0250_RAW

Which wedding are you: Beach, Mountain, Forest, or Countryside?

Definitely beach!  My own wedding was in Long Beach right in front of Mr. Pacific Ocean and I loved it.  I think breathing that beachy, fresh air made me less nervous!

If you could give one piece of wedding advice to a couple, what would that be………..?

Don’t be afraid to try something new!  Personalize your wedding with the little things you love about yourselves and each other and most importantly, please enjoy your day!  Once 12 pm hits on that clock, you’ll realize that it went by too fast!

Vendor Love – Ever Ours

Lydia creator of Ever Ours adores scouring the web for anything wedding inspirational from the big picture as in real weddings to the small details like wedding accessories.  She looks for everything unique, beautiful, stunning, astounding, amazing, gorgeous or anything that truly stands out in the world of weddings.  One of the friendliest people you will ever meet with a heart of gold, her blog should be on your MUST reads every day. We met Lydia at a wedding industry costume party last year and have kept and eye on her since.  She’s our source for fabulous wedding inspiration.

Thanks Lydia for sharing.

What is your favorite trend for weddings at the moment?
Creative backdrops for photobooths. Love when it’s not just a plain backdrop, but something fun and unique!

What made you decide to create Ever Ours?
When my 9 to 5 job started to become boring and I knew I wasn’t meant to be a paper pusher. I had always had interest in weddings, so when friends started to ask me for advice about weddings and ideas, I decided to start blogging as a way for them to come take a look.

Why should every bride in the world read Ever Ours?
To be inspired. To fall in love with ideas for their own wedding day and make it their own.

What FireFly package would you pick for your bachelorette party in Los Angeles?
It definitely have to be a mix of ATV/Surfing and some spa time.

Name 3 famous people you’d invite on your bachelorette party? Why?
Judy Garland , Audrey Hepburn, Julie Andrews. All three women have been of major importance in the world of entertainment. And I have always been huge fans of theirs. My sister says I was born in the wrong era especially since I tend to listen to old musicals, big band and anything from the rat pack era a lot. Would love to be in the same place with them. Pretty sure we’d have a ball!

What’s your most outrageous wedding memory, one you have been a guest?
When the whole bridal party jumped into the pool at the end of the night, and the groom cut his lip doing so.

Which wedding are you: Beach, Mountain, Forest, or Countryside?
I’d say Beach. But I’d like to add Backyard. And if I could, I’d choose Backyard.

20100302-IMG_1895

If you could bake a cake for anyone – who would it be and what flavor would it be?

Like most artistic people, nothing pleases me more than creating for my family, and those I love. I have so much fun creating with Holly Durst to make cakes for her friends and family too. If I was baking for my family today, this is what I would make; mr frostings…his moms carrot cake recipe, but I’m still working on making it as well as she did.  My girls…lindsey would be chocolate/chocolate/chocolate/chocolate. Lauren would be …vanilla with absolutely no buttercream involved.  My boys Nathan….new orleans pice. Matt ….last request from him was red velvet!

What FireFly package would you pick for your bachelor or bachelorette party?

This ones hard..mmmmm, lets go with cooking….always wish I had more time to play with expanding my menu for dinner.

Name 3 famous people you’d invite on your bachelor and bachelorette party? Why?

We have been so lucky, meeting some really famous people. Not to avoid the question, but famous is not always fun. I would rather have my friends there regardless of their fame.

blue cake_2

What’s your most outrageous wedding memory, either as a guest or a vendor?

Elizabeth Taylors wedding at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch…my first experience with a celebrity paparazzi nightmare. Actually watched a person parachute into the middle of the wedding while I was setting up a cake. STRANGE!!!

If you could give one piece of wedding advice to a couple, what would that be………..?

Cake related….serve cake to your guests that will enhance the meal and order what you like for the top tier….its not written in stone that you have to save the top for a year. Wedding related.. Regardless of what else you do, make it YOUR wedding. If you love it, so will all those that love you.

What is the secret to Mr. Frostings(Earl) success as a cake gigolo?

He just likes being Mr. Frostings. He makes every little task fun. He genuinely likes people, and enjoys mixing it up. He doesn’t care about Industry status, or who is who. I’m convinced that he could work at Forest Lawn, and make it fun. And, he is the funniest guy I have ever met.

mini cakes

Is Mr. Frostings just a pretty face or does he bake like a god?

I think he does everything like a God, but he would tell you that he is just the sizzle, and that I’m the Steak. He would never take any credit for Fantasy Frostings, which is just not true.

- Thanks Fantasy Frostings! It’s always a pleasure!

Holly Steen – Cakes & Kisses – Los Angeles Wedding Photographer

What is your favorite wedding photography trend at the moment?
My favorite wedding photography trend at the moment is colored bridal shoes. I am a huge fan of brides that think outside the box and buy shoes that match their lifestyle, rather than just their wedding dress. It is even better when the bride wears them for the engagement photos or tells me that she wore them during bachelorette party and broke the shoes in… that means no limping around the reception because of hurt feet.
What are the advantages of having your engagement shots taken by your wedding photographer?
The advantage of having engagement photos with your wedding photographer is simple… you get to know what it is like to be in front of the camera. It builds a trust and relationship that is different than sitting and chatting in a showroom. Although I try not to use all my jokes during the engagement, it is a great way for me to spend time with the couple and make them laugh. I think that the more time the couple spends together the better, and the more food/drinks the couple buys the photographer, the better the photo shoot.
What FireFly package would you pick for your bachelorette party?
The FireFly Events package that I will pick for my bachelorette party is pretty much a laundry list… I have different kinds of friends so I would do a few different to suit each of the groups. Recording Studio- Idol Wannabe, for my overly musically talented friends to sing at the top of our lungs “Lean on Me”, my anthem for 7th grade. Girlfriend Getaway – Sex in the City Weekend, for me and my closest craziest girls. The kind of “All for one and one for all” girls that you have tons of fun with but can’t share any of the stories because they would get us all in trouble. Plus, the Charlies Angel, Self Defense, with my girls and teach them some awesome ways to kick butt in and out of the bedroom.
Name 3 famous people you’d invite on your bachelorette party? Why?
Three famous people I would invite to my bachelorette party would first invite Jewel, the musician, to make my recording studio party to the next level and get us a Grammy. Second, comedian, Ellen DeGeneres, because she makes me laugh so hard, and I think it would be fun, because she probably has some pretty crazy stories. Third, mixed martial artist, Gina Carano, to give us some tips on how to be a knock out and give killer muay thai kicks!
What’s your most outrageous wedding memory, either one you have worked at or one you have been a guest?
So many outragerous wedding memories when I was a second shooter in my first few years of wedding. One of my favorites was for the daughter of the late Pat Morita (the infamous Mr. Miyagi) at a Buddist temple in Hollywood. It was amazing and exclusive, while being unique and special. During the toasting, the brides’ sister stood up and said, “Bonzai” and to have the whole room chime in with “Bonzai” even louder.  This chant carried on through the night was especially memberable when at the end of the first dance the guests all had score cards like “Dances with the Stars.” They received a perfect score.
Which wedding are you: Beach, Mountain, Forest, or Countryside?
I am a beach wedding girl. Some of my favorite beach weddings had lounging couches, bon fires, and perfect breeze that made the day seem so magical. I really think there is a mood that is captured in a beach wedding that is missed in a ballroom, or in a exclusive golf club.
If you could give one piece of wedding advice to a couple, what would that be………..?
Wedding advice is follow what you want. You will regret having the wedding your best friend, mom wanted. Have the wedding that you want, so you can look back at your wedding photos and remember that every moment that was captured was part of your day. This is more marriage advice, but be sure to marry someone that you enjoy listening to and talking to. They will be the one person you can depend on for an opinion, advice, or a shoulder to cry on.

Holly from Cakes & Kisses, lives & breathes photography and it shows. She cries at every wedding, her heart is always in the right place. She cares and feels the joy of each couple. Holly will capture your most cherishible moments, creating art pieces and documenting your day.

If she’s not documenting marital bliss, you’ll find her at a Dodgers games or getting her new studio space ready for the wedding season.  - go Holly.

Holly has become a lovely friend and she will soon become yours, she will make you feel at ease the moment you meet her.
